[Issue]Unable to open an Access database (MDB) with LO 3.4

Post by jeanmi2403 »

Hello,
I get regular MSAccess databases, and I read with Base, waiting to rebuild completely.
I have seen with Lo 3.4, you can not read MSAccess databases. This fact will it last, or is it simply because the development is completed?
The bug has been post.... since no news
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38765
To reproduce the bug:
- File / New / Database
-Connect to an existing database
- Microsoft Access drop-down list (so far it's going ....)
- Next and then select the file (I put a sample file attached)
- Patatras! DataPilot not found ... (I can not remember the exact message, rage, I'm back with 3.3)

It is a shame to show this feature and it is not operational!

Sincerely,

No matter which database you connect to, in most cases you need the database drivers from the database vendor. There are some of the free database drivers shipped with this office suite but you can not expect strictly proprietary Microsoft drivers shipped with a free office suite.
All about Access

Hello,

And why it works there with LibreOffice 3.3?

Because "there" they have the Microsoft package installed and it would work with any version of OpenOffice.org and dozends of other database applications as well. The drivers are frequently used with database applications on CD Rom (catalogues, diet plans, cooking recipes, budgeting tools).

"Here" it will never work because Microsoft does not publish these drivers for operating systems other than Windows.

The LibO 3.4.1 under win7 I tested I get missing SDBC driver error, opened existing mdb connected odb file, or created new one, when I clicked on Tables pane in database window.
It means the program was created wrongly, not contains existing driver in other versions.

The LibO team not contain developer and QA resource to catch such type of bugs.
The Base part will be less usable after each new version of LibO.

Is ODBC a viable alternative?

I am still confused. Using a computer with Windows 7 and LibreOffice 3.3.x I am able to work with an Access 2003 database with no problems. Using the same Windows 7 computer and LibreOffice 3.4.1 I am not able to work with the same Access 2003 database. I get all the symptoms noted in the earlier comments. I really don't care about whether MS will support Linux. Is this a "bug" in the current version of LibreOffice or is it a "feature" which will mean I can no longer easily operate on my older Access databases and may want to rethink use of LibreOffice? If this is a "feature", then is there a way for a user to regain the lost functionality - explained in terms a LibreOffice user (not a code pig) can understand and implement?

This topic will be read by hundreds of others and one of the most frequent questions is why Access can not be used outside Windows.

Yes, it is. It is unlikely that this can be fixed soon since there is not a single Base developer in the LibreOffice team.

You can still set up an ODBC connection in the system panel and plug Base to that ODBC data source.

Thank you for timely and clear response. I setup Access db for ODBC connection and it worked very smoothly. Now I can continue to work with LibreOffice base until the "bug" is fixed.

Good evening,
Indeed, ODBC allows access. It's a bit longer to implement, but it works. Thank you for the method!
