Could you elaborate a little bit please? Is there a show-stopping legal or technical reason that it couldn't be ported to the iPad, or has it just not been done yet due to scarce resources?

Would think it is because iDevices do not use OSX and there is no iOS version of OOo.
OpenOffice 3.1 on Windows Vista / NeoOffice 2.2.3 with MacOS 10.4 / OpenOffice 2.4 on Ubuntu 9.04

The service Vlad links to is a Web app; therefore it's only usable if you have internet access.
