Re: CRASH after yum update
This might be a Fedora issue. The original packages from the OOo web-site or from the LibreOffice web-site use to work much better.
A corrupted user profile may be another culprit. Close the office, rename ~/.openoffice.org/, restart and see if you get a clean start with a new profile.

Re: CRASH after yum update
You can't mix the Fedora-packaged OOo and the OO.org builds: some of the package names conflict and yum will remove some of the OO.org packages whenever you do an update.
Just to be sure, I would: remove all the packages of both, then choose one or the other and install only that one. I recommend using only the Fedora-packaged OOo, because it's simpler to install, is tuned for Fedora, and gets automatic updates.
PS: Villeroy has an excellent point: LibreOffice should not have the same problem; you can install it along with the Fedora packages, if you want.

Re: CRASH after yum update
I've used open office for a long time and no crashes. As a matter of fact cannot remember any Fedora crashes.
I want open office NOT a research project!!!
OK I'll just go (via my dual boot) to XP Professional and use word.
Open office install is an unnecessary mess.
I have 45 years experience in heavy IT ..programming.
How is a beginner to cope with this mess

Re: CRASH after yum update
You assume that this is a frequent problem which is not true. I use OOo since version 1 and suffered only once from this type of problem.
Ask the Fedora people why they distribute modified compilations of this software without sufficient testing. The original packages from the download sites are more stable and you can upgrade when you want to.
Regarding broken profiles, this is exactly the same trouble as in Firefox, Thunderbird and similar programs. Weird problems can be cured by deleting the profile folder regardless of OS. Certain extensions or skipping too many version numbers have a tendency to break user profiles when the host application upgrades.
Renaming a single folder is easy enough even for beginners. If this cures the main problem we can see how to get most of your old customizations back.

Re: CRASH after yum update
I started off with an automatically installed openoffice through a
Fedora "fat" install.
Now I am starting with (for the first time ) a minimal install.
There is no way I know of to stop openoffice from
being updated by yum. Again, I don't need a research project!
Even if I decided to start ove and remove and reinstall, it would
be meticulous and take time.
BTW rename ~/.openoffice.org/ to what???
mv ~/.openoffice.org/ ~/.openofficeXYZ.org/
For years I've seen "yum update" update openoffice
numerous times. I remember because the updates are large and it takes
time to update.

Re: CRASH after yum update
Under Ubuntu I have known the default startup User Profile of OpenOffice to be corrupt and cause an immediate crash; the cure is to delete the User Profile so that OOo creates a new one on next startup. This is worth trying on any other linux install of OOo.

is that the executable or a directory containing the executable.
How do I start the program then in?
I usually use the icon that your installer installed
mv ~/.openoffice.org/ ~/.openofficeXYZ.org/

Like all the other files with dot in front of the name this is user editable configuration (Windows Reg: HKLM\CurrentUser). You never have any executables in your home directory except the ones you put in there by your own.

yes indeed scientific programming
I'd get nowhere if I had to spend hours fixing EVERYTHING
write my own yum, office
I installed gkrellm and others via a simple
yum install gkrellm
yum install eclipse
yum install kde*

Re: Crash after yum update
Check that one: reset your OOo user profile but don't transfer your personal data during the welcome process (if you had 2.x before), configuration files from the former version might corrupt the new profile.

Re: Crash after yum update
There is no executable in the profile. So launch OOo as you do usually. I guess that there is a menu entry in your applications menu.

Fedora uses the official build IIRC. So installing from the RPM on the OOo web site should not change anything I guess.

Re: Crash after yum update
THANKS as I said, I didn't fix the crash problem.
I did do a great job installing OpenOffice 3.3 and I suggest somebody
publish the method on your site. Yours site has scattered install notes
and needs work.
There are others with crash problems...one had a crash similar to mine.
He/she did a yum update (1 update for OpenOffice) and suddenly got a crash on startup.

Re: Crash after yum update
I did say earlier in the thread that with Ubuntu one sometimes got a bad User Profile immediately after installation. The cure for this was to delete the User Profile; this might well be the case also under Fedora.

the install method I described above has encountered NO crashes or other problems.
It is an all yumex all rpm method. No other funny business!
This is true even with a new kernel for Fedora 14
