2.4 runs slower than 2.3 in OS10.4.11 on mac PPC

Hi,

I just downloaded the new release and it seems to run much slower on my system than the earlier version. I am using OS 10.4.11 on mac PPC G4 cube. Anybody else experience this? I do have an older processor, 450MHz, so things are a bit slow anyway, but version still 2.3 ran ok. Version 2.4 is too slow to bother with. Any suggestions, other than the obvious hardware upgrade?

I'll give some hardware upgrade tips anyway...

Open a console window and run the top command, then start OOo. The change in CPU utilization and available RAM may give you an indication of whether shortage is in RAM size or CPU speed. I'm fine on a G3/700MHz iBook with 256 MB of RAM, but a G4/800MHz eMac with 128 MB is somewhat sluggish.

RAM isn't very expensive, so if you're short on that, maybe this kind of hardware upgrade is still an option...

Thanks for the reply. I admit I haven't used the console and do not know what the top command is. Can you give any more background on that before I type it in? I currently have 1.25 GB SDRAM, just 256 GB short to the full amount.

I used the top command as suggested above (but in Terminal rather than Console). The CPU usage for OOo 2.3 with a Calc spreadsheet that contains a year or so worth of bank entries was 11.7 %; the CPU usage opening the same spread sheet in OOo 2.4 was 29.8 %. Quite a bit more, yes? Is that to be expected for the additional functionality offered? Maybe I should compare it to other usage intensive programs I have such as, Adobe Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS, which still work fine on my system.

I see there hasn't been any further discussion on this. No one else thinks 2.4 runs way too slow? I have other "power hungry" apps that are no where near as slow as Oo 2.4. Sorry I can't offer any technical improvements myself.
