[Solved] Updating to new one and other things

Post by chimp78 »

Hi,

I currently have OpenOffice 3x, is it old one? I recently scanned with Secunia PSI to see if there are software that are expired and need to be updated. Openoffice is one of them because it is insecure.

I need to know is it necessary to update a new one or is it an option?

If I do update it, will data on the old one get lose during updating? I saved photos and words on previous OpenOffice.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

3.x is rather vague! Latest stable has just been released few days ago, it's 3.3. But former versions can be used too (like 3.2.1 or 3.1). Not being the latest version doesn't mean it's insecure! Your data won't be lost, don't worry. Note that saving photos with OOo is rather weird. What do you mean exactly?

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks,

I checked it is 3.1. I have had it for almost years, nothing strange has happened to it. My desktop just shut down unexpectedly due to some device or software not being installed or updated. I then asked for some help at Vista forum, and a person gave me a link of that site to check for expired software, and that is how I came up. I do agree that it might sound puzzled that it stated OpenOffice need to be updated because of insecure. My desktop is fine now.

Oh to be more clarify, I just copy a photo and paste it on OpenOffice to save it.

There are always been minor security fixes like those ones but there has been very few major security holes where upgrade was really needed.

NB: for pictures, why don't you save them in a dedicated folder instead of embedding them in another "box" that could lose them? (there are some topics about such problems).

Thanks,

Do I really have to upgrade to 3.3 or use 3.1 despite the issues?

How can I dedicate folder for photos?

Up to you. Better upgrade anyway to have the latest features and the bug fixes.

On your hard drive, make a folder where you put all your photos with subfolders to sort them (by date or by theme) and make regular backups of these folders. Use a picture manager (I like XnView, available in English) to view them and for some basic manipulation.
