Previously functional text doc now unreadable

Post by aapartridge »

Hello
Students at the school where I work all use Open Office for assignments.
In multiple cases, they will create a text document, save it and then return to it a few weeks later to find multiple pages of this :

Code: Select all

"##############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################"
is there anything we can do to retrieve these documents ?
or prevent it from happening?
thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Sadly, nothing to do: 22 page term paper replaced with pound signs.

Check your backup folder, who knows: [Tutorial] The OOo user profile. What OS?

Were the students working direct to USB keys? Bad idea with OpenOffice. Also, they _must_ have it emphasised to them not to rush computer shutdown or log-offs. If they do, there is great likelyhood that the computer will be powered off before the write buffers are flushed, giving garbage files such as you have found.

If Win7HomeP is running on the server, if it is anything like Win2K Professional, as opposed to Win2K Server, it can only handle limited network connections. From memory Win2KPro can only handle 12 connections at a time; it would not be surprising if Win7HomeP had an even lower number of concurrent connections.
