My Firefox does not allow Certain OOo Icons

Post by richard »

My Firefox must be set wrongly. It will not publish OOo Thread Icons or the 'Post Reply' or 'New Topic' buttons. But then neither does it publish background colors, the correct layout, and who knows what all.

Has anyone come across this? In both Opera and IE i get all the Icons plus the correct layouts (frames, divisions, etc.) and the background colors. Why should my Firefox be so picky?

Can you attach a screenshot ?

Have you tried to create another FF profile ? Or rename temporarily your current profile and test with the new blank one created at the next FF session.

NB: no problem with my FF 2.0.0.6 but users have reported issues with the 2.0.0.10 version.

It is most likely not Firefox directly that is the problem, but either one or more extensions your are running and or a theme you are using.

The test is very simple. Close firefox completely - then restart it with this command line:
firefox -safe-mode

This will suspend any extensions or themes you are using - I suspect you will find that all is working properly.

We would very much like to know what extensions you are using, if that is the case.

Try clearing your cache (Edit > Preferences > Privacy > Private Data > Clear Now... ) and then re-load the site. Does that help?

Thank you all for answering to my Firefox problem. Taking the last message first:

[A] I noticed that by v.2.0.0.10 that 'Preferences' were no longer listed under 'File'; i now have v.2.0.0.11 and it is the same.
“Cache” is now listed under Tools > Options > Advanced > Network Tab.

After clearing Cache and restarting, i do notice one improvement: I now get the icons on the left of the items in the main minue. But still do not get 'PostReply' and 'NewTopic' buttons.

I pllugged 'firefox -safe-mode' in 'Run' and got the Firfox window in safe-mode. But it loaded OOo still without the 'PostReply' and 'NewTopic' buttons.

I guess the next thing is to create another FF profile --

I am off to try the account changing. I will get back with you on that. Thank you all for your help.

Hi Richard, I've modified your post to make it clearer. You can edit it (without making changes) to see how the Quote feature works. There is a button just above the area where you type your message.

If the safe-mode doesn't work, it may be something deeper in the system. If you've time, can you try with a previous version of FF ? In the preferences, do you notice any option uncheck that could be detrimental to the display ?

Is this common practice? I was unaware that anyone could or should modify someone else's posts.

No, it's not but here is why I did it:
  • The post was rather difficult to read.
  • Richard will be able to see the structure by editing his own post. I gave him a kind of example.
  • As a moderator, I can edit the posts if the content has a problem (that's the role of a moderator I guess). As I just changed the layout without changing anything in the meaning, it doesn't sounds wrong to me.

I have FF2.0.0.11 and I have no problems at all. Those screen shots look very odd but I can't offer an explanation. :roll:

Btw mods normally only edit posts if somebody posted abusive language or advertised illegal activities and such but I feel we can trust Hagar. 8-)

Having had a look at your screen shot, the problem seems to be with your CSS loading. phpBB3 is a lot more optimised in terms of its HTML efficiency and split of style from content. So the HTML for the Edit icon, for example

Code: Select all

<li class="edit-icon"><a href="./posting.php?mode=edit&f=49&p=1687"
    title="Edit post"><span>Edit post</span></a></li>
. So note that this contains no img tag and the button menu presented as an HTML list. The CSS converts this into a line of buttons and associates the images by the following:

Code: Select all

.edit-icon, .edit-icon a			{ background: none top left no-repeat; }
ul.profile-icons li.edit-icon	{ width: 42px; height: 20px; }
ul.profile-icons li.edit-icon	{ margin: 0 0 0 3px; }
.edit-icon, .edit-icon a
  { background-image: url("./styles/prosilver/imageset/en/icon_post_edit.gif"); }
This is fine unless the CSS is not being loaded for some reason. So if you wan to help track this one down, and we would be very obliged if you could, then why not try loading the Firefox Web Developer add-in and do a Tools -> Web Developer -> CSS -> View CSS to see if it is being loaded properly. Thanks.

That was my thought as well, but even if I load the page with View > Page Style > No Style, it doesn't look like the screenshots. E.g. I still get the "Post Reply" links, even without any button graphics.

I think that the styles are certainly a factor here, though like you say, some links seems to be missing. This is a case where some O/P from the Web Developer tools would be useful: such as the generated HTML and the loaded CSS. It looks like we've bottomed the email problem so this appears to be the other main issue that is hitting people — even if it is only a few %, its still a pain and a source of incident requests.
