Draw is slow on a big file.

Post by dcat127 »

Draw is very slow with the following:
32.6 mb file
44 pages
lots of graphics (all unlinked)

Computer:
Windows Xp
Intel Core 2 2.13ghz
2GB Ram
Openoffice 3.2.0

I realize that I am pushing draw beyond what it was intended for...but is there anything I can do to improve speed?

You could increase settings under /Tools / Options / OpenOffice.org / Memory. It might be a good idea to restart OpenOffice after these changes.

Can you break the file into smaller pieces?

Thanks... increasing the memory helps...a little.
Yes I could break the file into smaller pieces, but I don't want to (it is a catalog and I need to print it out in 1 piece)

You could break the file into chunks, make a .pdf of each section then combine the .pdf files. Recently some utilities which combined .pdf files were discussed in this thread

I found another thing that helps. Many of my graphics were a higher resolution than was needed. I wrote this program to compress the files....reduced the size by about 1/2.
I decided to post it in-case anyone else runs into this.

It may also work on writer, or impress files (did not check)

Impress files are well handled by Sun Presentation Minimiser from the Extensions repository at http://www.openoffice.org. The source code for this is available.

Typically, for printing purposes continuous tone illustrations do not need to be of higher resolution than 200 dpi, with line graphics betweebn 300 and 600 (less jaggies at 600). Ideally they all should be sized correctly _before_ importation into the final layout program.

Even more, for actually presenting a show, anything beyond about 120 dpi is entirely wasted.

The original query concerned Draw and the printing of a catalogue from Draw.

Normally, if making a presentation, i would try to size my graphics to 1024x768 pixels, the native resolution of my beamer, but Sun Presentation Minimiser will do that anyway after it is run on the finished presentation.
