Problem with .odt file, can't see its content

Post by taseta »

Hi!, I have a problem with an .odt file, when I try to open it I can only see pounds (#). I've created this file with Open Office, last time I opened it showed me that (########....).

I tried to change its extention to .zip and open it with Total Commander but I couldn't unzip it, I was trying to reach "content.xml".

I would appreciate your help very very much. That file has 25 pages of my work :(, I leave it here.

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING

P.D. Sorry about my English.

Sorry, your file is broken--there is no information in it to be recovered; it contains nothing but zeros.

You'll need to go to your last backup copy of the document.

By the way, what system are you working on? Mac OS X, I presume?

Nothing there, sorry!

Did something happen as you were saving the file? Were you working to a USB stick?

Hi!, I don't know what happened, don't remember anything special when I was saving it.

Yes, right now I'm using Mac OS X (at work), but I was working with Windows 7 at that moment.

Thanks for your time :(.

We hadn't seen it for some time. See that thread: 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.

You should add in your signature what OS you use.

Ok, that's why I asked.

As far as I can remember, files with this kind of "zero content" have only been reported by Windows users--but, of course, there are a lot more Windows users than Mac or Linux, so it may be a coincidence.

No, there are a couple of Mac and GNU/Linux users sadly (the complete list here). But 90% Windows users.

I tried to do that, the problem is that I can't even unzip it, I tried with Total Commander. :(

And I don't use this Mac always, I'm out of home... I have windows 7. I created, saved and opened that file with Windows 7, forget about this Mac :)

Anyway, you can't put very much in a 1KB file! Note that .odt is already a zipped file.

Your only hope is to find a backup in the OOo profile (see [Tutorial] The OOo user profile). Or another version you would have saved before.

Right. You can't do anything with it because the file contains nothing but zeros. There is no usable information in the file.

Well, there's my memory for you again. Great list, BTW. I'll have to make a note of that!

It is being reported as an "incomplete archive", unmountable. Someone else using different tools may get further, but not very much further. look for a perez.bak file, or start rewriting.
