Can't open docx file

Post by capnturkey »

I have a docx file that OO 3.2.1 cannot open. It is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/mjz1zmoyzzmnwym/

(You may have to cut and paste url)

I downloaded Compatibility Pack and was able to open it in Word 2000 so I know the file is not corrupt.

I try to push OO in the workplace but things like this make the Office diehards even more stubborn so I hope someone can figure this out.

TIA
tom

That is not work for me (Firefox 3.6.6)...
The errormessage of Mediafire:
Invalid or Deleted File
Try zip the file, and upload here. Maybe a 145 kiB file you can to zip to file less than 128 kiB.

That file contains HTML or XML pages from internet.

Maybe it is not a docx, but MSO2003 type xml file (?)

The content is wider than the current portrait form page. I opened it with MSO Xp and compatible package:
badfile_MSOXP_with_compatible_package.png
Then I change the page properties to A3 landscape, and saved it to MSO xp format:
Here it is, in zipped format:
badfile97xp.doc.zip
(120.67 KiB) Downloaded 141 times

So the answer is: this is not truly a docx file and that is why OO can't open it? But MSO can open it... Not good when I am trying to tell users OO is better than MSo and does everything MSO can.

Thanks very much!

This goes to show that MS Office can make an unmanageable mess of something that should be fairly straightforward. (-::

I can open the original file, which has 6 tables, one inside the other. While Writer can handle the content, it doesn't display it very well, it seems.

One cell of an "inner table" contains a text that I can copy, and when pasted to an empty document, it constitutes twenty A4 pages defining standards for the card game of Bridge. The "outer" table is wider than the defined page width, so it's hard to get hold of. I haven't bothered to try.

While you may argue that this is MS Word's fault, I guess you won't get any acceptance from the regular user. Better settle with the fact that one application can not be expected to perfectly handle "advanced" output from another app. At least, Writer handles Word files better than Word handles Writer files...

Trouble is it does not do everything the same way so there can never be total compatibility between the two. I can confirm that your file is not a .docx file (or is a corrupt one) as Word 2007 opens it in compatibility mode, and even then it is not rendered correctly with the images on page one and two. If I save it in Word 2007, as a .docx file I can then open it in Writer, however I cannot see all the text because for some unfathomable reason the ToC and all the following text is enclosed in a single cell table overlapping every page, and this is something Writer does not like.

If your company has lots of old Word documents designed in such a mad fashion as this example then I would stick with MS Office.

Have you checked the several links given in the sticky where you had posted first? They explain a lot of things about docx format and the MS policy about so called interoperability.
