[Solved] Medical dictionary

Post by riyasmp »

Dear Guys

i am using ubuntu 10 4 and oOo 3.2. I recently added a medical dictionay as an extension in oOo 3.2. still the open office wont pick up medical terms. i went through all most the post available but none of the post gives me an exact answer to fix it atleast in lay mans terms i mean. I use english Uk dictionary as my default.

what all i want it to make my medical dictionary and standard dic work together. on top of it when i add new words to dictionay i have to add it twice with capital letter and small letter infront otherwise it will highlight it the one which is not added.

i am sorry to add this as a new topic. I just did it because i am not good with commands unless some one tell me the stepwise instruction to do it.

thanks a lot in advance

Can you give us a link to the extension, so we can give it a try and see if it works? Maybe there's some problem with the extension.

If you look in Tools > Extension Manager, do you see the medical dictionary there in the list? Is it shown as "Enabled"?

See that one: Install of another dictionary deactivates current dictionary.

For the capitalized words, you've indeed to add them manually.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

thanks Hagar

i had a read on the link you gave me before I posted my query here. To be honest I din really understand the last step of it.the way the dictionaries are combined.secondly when I added this extension it never deactivated my current dictionary.

I checked in the wordbook and i cant see anything apart from standard.dic

what I would love to do is use it together and if it is customizable before I start using , it would be brilliant.

thaks a lot for ur time and effort

Ok; thanks.

Well, it works fine for me: all I had to do was install it and it "just worked".

You have to click on the item in the Tools > Extension Manager to see the status of the extension, but if it's disabled, the label is also grayed-out. It's a little hard to see, but from your screenshot, it looks like it's active.

I'm not sure what else to suggest--I didn't have to combine dictionaries or adjust anything. I guess it could be a compatibility issue with Ubuntu or their OOo build.

I can't add words to that dictionary specifically; if I add a new word, it goes into my personal dictionary, and is available to any document I'm working on.
 Edit: PS:
Have you completely re-started OOo (including the "quickstarter") since you installed the dictionary? If not, that might be worth a try. You can log out and log in again to be sure that OOo is completely re-started; it shouldn't be necessary to re-boot.

Indeed, not really easy to follow. What you can try:
- remove the extension and close OOo
- open the extension with an archive manager (it's a mere zip file in fact)
- open the dictionaries.xcu file with a text editor (Gedit for example)
- change the string <value>en-US</value> to <value>en-US en-GB</value>
- close the file, update it in the archive and close the archive
- open OOo and install the extension
-> the medical dictionary should be activated together with the UK dic.

The trick is that the medical dic is only activated for the en-US locale!

I just tested that on a 3.1 version on XP with the French dictionary and both dics work together. Have you restarted OOo (I forgot to add it as the last step above)?

If no change, it can mean that there is difference in the way the Novell version handles the dictionaries. If so, try to install the Sun version: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co. Also reset your OOo user profile. But during the welcome process (if you had 2.x before), don't transfer your personal data. Better remove any bit of the former version.

Since you've changed the extension, you just has to install it directly now.

I have made sequential upgrades for ubuntu from 8 04. so can i install the open office (the tar file downloaded from the site) and then add the extension with the changes on 0xt file u suggested. or can i install the medical dictionary file without the changes u suggested.

thanks

Dear Hagar

I eventually installed open office US version from the website even though i actually wanted to install UK version. It was accidental because one of the sites gave me exactly what command to put into the terminal to do it. and by default it was all US version. US version from the site has got medical dictionary built in as an extension which is very handy.

If you could answer these questions that would be very helpful now

1) Can I add more words my self to the medical dictionary opening the en_US-openmedspel.dic with g edit. If ido that would it create any more problems
2)If I add any more dictionaries through extension manager would it de-activate my current dictionay?
3)Suppose If i have 5 dictionaries installed as an extension and I just need 3 to work for a document is there any way to customize it!

thanks a lot

Have you downloaded the correct tarball? the one with debs (and not the one with RPMs)? The link I've given you contains all the command lines you need.

Note that you can install the UK language pack afterward to get the UK GUI.

For your questions:
1. The .dic file has a special encoding. You can try but not sure it will work.
2. It should not, see the trick I've given, check the extension first to see if the dic is activated for your language
3. Not sure I understand you. you can't switch off dics per a document basis.

i tried with the same commands described in the link u gave me earlier. u can see the paste bin, i might have put some wrong commands because what all i can do is copy and paste commands.

There was a link in one of the forums how to do it from the command line. even though it was for US version i have done it eventually. all are working fine now

i had a tough time with anyway... :D

thanks a lot

That's the problem when you copy/paste commands without understanding what you are doing: you don't get what you wanted to do in fact. I checked the language packs and there is no UK package. But 3.2 is available in UK localization so you still can reinstall the whole suite in UK.

Have you managed to make both dics work together? If so (rebooting may help), thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.
