JRE is defective

Post by emmausdan »

I have just recently installed OpenOffice 3.1.1 I tried to create a new database and everytime I open the Database I get an error message that says "JRE is defective".

I went to Tools, Options, OpenOffice.org, Java and it says that I have these JRE's:

Sun Micro Systems, Inc. Version: 1.6.0_18
Sun Micro Systems, Inc. Version: 1.6.0_16
Sun Micro Systems, Inc. Version: 1.6.0_07
Sun Micro Systems, Inc. Version: 1.6.0_05
Sun Micro Systems, Inc. Version: 1.6.0_03

What do I need to do?

I would remove all of the JRE's and re-install only the latest version. Use Javara http://raproducts.org/javara.html.

I was able to delete all but one of the JRE, the latest, when I try to remove it it says that it is in use. Sometimes IE uses Java.

Start your computer in Safe Mode and then try to delete Java.

You don't delete it you uninstall it either by using Windows Add/Remove or Javara.

I'm having the exact same problem. However, I have only one jre, 6.18, the one installed with OpenOffice. I've even uninstalled the jre and OO and reinstalled both. No go. Whenever I try a query or report I get the invalid jre error. What gives?

Start over. Uninstall your Java and re-install from the Sun website at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp. Download and install Openoffice without the JRE from here http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#tested-full. Un-check the box that says " Include the JRE to the download (this option is not available for Linux 32/64-bit Debian and Mac OS)."

Yes, just did this. Not sure what "pathing means". There's a jre folder unde the java folder. The jre folder contains three more folders two of which have multiple subfolders. In Java Options I tried a variety of these paths via the Class Path button. None worked. What am I missing?

On Fedora 12 OpenOffice refused to even open (defective Java message) with the Sun Java I had just installed and set as system default, so I had to set OpenJDK as the system default, open OpenOffice and set Java at Tools>Options...>OpenOffice.org>Java to OpenJDK, then reset my system to general Sun Java.

At Tools>Options...>OpenOffice.org>Java there's something about "with accessibility support" next to OpenJDK under "Features" which is not there for general Sun or gcj. Don't know if it's relevant.

thomasjk, I tried what you suggested.

1. uninstalled the Java JRE
2. uninstalled Openoffice
3. re-installed the Java JRE from the url you provided.
4. re-installed the OpenOffice from the url you provided (made sure to get the version without the JRE)

Upon launching OpenOffice and trying to set up a database got the same error message. I pastor a church and the church has a laptop that I use. On the laptop Openoffice allows me to set up a database. The laptop is also Win XP.

In Tools--->Options-->OPeonoffice.org--->Java is "Use a Java runtime environment" checked and is the radio button next to the JRE listing also checked?

Thomasjk, yes "Use a Java runtime environment" is checked. The radio button next to JRE has a green dot in it (does not have a check mark).

BTW, on the church laptop on which Base is working, the Java version is older? I installed the OpenOffice.org on the laptop several days after I did the install on the desktop. On the desktop there is only one version of JRE 1.6.0_18 On the laptop there are two JRE versions: JRE 1.6.0_16 & JRE 1.6.0_17 The version 17 is the version with the radio button that is green.

Perhaps you need to try the older V17. That's what I'm using.

Tom, OpenOffice 3.1 is what I have. Just downloaded it last week to the desktop and a couple of days ago to the laptop. 3.1 is also having problems with Java 6 JRE 18.

I went to the Sun website and to the archive and downloaded v17. I installed it in the jre6 folder where the other JRE files were.

[SOLVED] Re: JRE is defective

Post by W3BNR »

After playing around with OO today with the JRE problem -

1. Removing all java and jre directories and uninstalling OO.
Installing OO 3.2.0 with JRE I had the JRE defective box when trying to 'export' ods files to html.
3.2.0 installed Java 6 Update 18.

2. Removing all java and jre directories and uninstalling OO
Installing OO 3.1.1 with JRE the 'export' ods files to html worked fine.
3.1.1 installed Java 6 Update 16

3. Removed all java and jre directories and uninstalled OO
Installed Java 6 (which gave me update 18) from the SUN java page
Installed OO 3.2.0 without JRE and had the JRE defective box when trying to 'export' ods files to html.

Solution to have OO 'export' to html without the JRE Defective message was to remove all java and jre directories and reinstall 3.1.1 with jre (update 16).

I will stay on OO 3.1.1 until whatever the problem is - is fixed.

What kind of 'export' are you using?
- Save as in HTML format
- Send ... Create HTML document
What are you HTML settings in Options->Load Save->HTML Compatibility?

I do not have this issue with OOo 3.2 on XP SP3 with jre 1.6.18.

Did you try to reset your user-profile of OOo?
From your post I notice that you are not afraid to experiment a little. The suggestion for tools in this post might give you more control in finding the issue.

Using Windows XP SP3 up-to-date
SeaMonkey 2.02 for internet
Saving in HTML

HTML settings in OO 3.1.1:
Sizes- 7, 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, 36
Export- Netscape Navigator
Display Warning
Copy local graphics to internet
Char Set - Western Europe (Windows 1252/Win Latin1)

for all settings settings in 'options' no matter which version of OO I've used (since day 1) have I changed anything from the default values.

OK - Uninstalled OO 3.1.1 and Java 6.0 Update 16 (Only Java on machine)

Installed OO 3.2 en-US with JRE (Java 6.0 Update 18)

All settings factory default. And the settings for HTML options same as in previous message.

When trying to save a spreadsheet (.ods) file using the 'export' save as HTML I still get the
JRE is defective box:
"OO.org requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another Version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-options-OO.org-Java."

One additional note - if I try to 'export' save as HTML with a writer (.odt) file there is no problem. It works as expected.
This leads me to believe the problem is OO NOT Java.

I can not reproduce this with simple and complex Calc sheet.
Did you try to save very simple Calc sheet as HTML?
Did you try to reset your profile (see here, you can always go back)
Can you post your Calc sheet (or a abstract that exhibit the same problem) ?

Yes, it will "Save as" HTML -

The problem is with 'Export - Save in - XHTML (.html;.xhtml)
Saving in 'Export - Save in - PDF" works with no problem.

Since Export to html/xhtml is an option for output, it should work.

When I select Export... I can only save in PDF not in HTML/XHTML. Are you using an extension (There is one 'Write2xhtml filters')? Is that extension ready for java 1.6.18 and OOo 3.2?
Are you using GO-OO version rather than OOo version from http://www.openoffice.org?
I loaded the mentioned extension and did not got any issues with an export (you might try to re-install that extension).

1. No - No extensions
2. I don't know - Never used it
3. Yes - OO.org 3.2.0 000320m12(Build 9483)

And I only have two extensions installed:
English spelling & hyphonation dictionaries & thesaurus 2009.05.08
SUN PDF Import Extension 1.0.1

Interesting that I have the two options in saving the exported file. PDF and HTML and you don't.

If I understand you right you are using GO-OO version. That explains the differences. They have packed some extensions with it and some extra stuff and it looks like you hit something that is not part of the official OOo build. I tried GO-OO also for some time, but stability vs extra functionality was not good enough for me (but that is personal). I think that you should raise an issue against that product or try to find their 'hidden' extensions and try to replace that with the one I mentioned.
P.S.
I would suggest that you update your profile of this forum and state clearly at which version of OOo you are etc. It might helped to nail this down quicker.

3. No - I am running OO.org 3.2.0 000320m12(Build 9483) directly from the OO download page.

OK - apparently solved. At least I got it working again.
Although I did this before, I did it again. And it looks like it solved the EXPORT problem.

I removed the OpenOffice/3/user directory and created a new one.

Why didn't it work before? I have no idea.
Why did I only get the error when trying to convert a .ods (Spreadsheet) file and no other types? I have no idea.

I found the same problem with 3.2.0 on Windows XP SP3 - JRE 1.6.0_18 resetting the user profile provided a temporary fix but the problem came back...... I found it when trying to access the macro tab of format>picture and creating a new database.

Just thinking about moving back to 3.1.1.....
