Recover Old Version of OpenOffice.org text (.odt) ?

Post by willdelphia »

I am using ubuntu

help! :( I had an open office document text and accidentally over-wrote it with a completely different file! i am not sure how it happened but it seems like I "saved link as" from a browser and accidentally double clicked on the existing file - and it now contains the text I was downloading.

does ubuntu save old versions of documents? does open office have a revert function?

i really need the document that was lost and it seems like this problem is way too easy to make for there not to be safeguard, I hope I am right

Welcome to this forum willdelphia!

Try searching for files *.bak. If one has the same name as your file, make a copy of it, then make a second copy and change its extension to .odt.
Under Ubuntu, the default backup path is home/yourname/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup

The safeguard is you making backups. Save often when working on a document, ideally using different names (append _001, _002, etc) and saving in different folders.

I'm afraid not. For the future, make sure Tools > options > Load/Save > General > Always create backup copy is checked (selected). But don't rely on that solely - make your own backups too, as described above.
