Full access now returned - late

Post by DrewJensen »

First - I must apologize to all here.

This morning the forum software was left in a disabled ( locked for posting ) state longer then was required for about 2 1/2 hours.

This was my fault alone. The network staff actually finished work earlier then planned and I was not available at the time I had originally said I would be.

The board was unlocked as soon as I realized the situation.

Sincerely

The View New Posts link is showing 7 new posts for me, in the link and the results, yet there are many more than that when I look at the Board Index.

Is this because I visited the site during the time it was displaying "Offline for scheduled software update"? Was my cookie updated then, and that is being used to determine what are new to me?

Listen Drew, we're gonna have to take it out of your pay if you can't be available to babysit this forum night and day. ;-)

Seriously, thanks for all the effort you (and TerryE, and others I'm sure) are putting in. I am, and I think many others are, enjoying the new forum's features and ongoing upgrades--which wouldn't be happening if you weren't putting so much time into it.

I think the cookie problem that huw encountered is a real problem for phpBB. You can delete the cookies and start from square one, but it would be more useful if you could manually set that 'last visited' date, to e.g. 24 hours ago. That should take care of a situation where you know there are recent posts you've missed, without losing all your history. Have you seen any feature to do that? I've never even looked at the board cookies; maybe it's something you could do with an editor?

I think we all managed to be without the forum for the few hours it was offline :-)

I wasn't very concerned by the wrong new posts, I just wanted to understand why it was. It would good if the cookie could be set to the time the site went down, but only if it's easy.

One thing I did notice was that the offline message didn't give any dates and times. Regulars might have a little panic, and come back the next day anyway, but new arrivals could well see that and think "Oh, another dead site on the internet", and not try again. An 'expected back online' date & time would be good for both.
