How can I change open office default settings?

Post by beejay2008 »

I use Windows vista on my laptop. When I first installed open office I picked the option of using it as the default to open all documents, It seems to be incompatible with microsoft word emailed documents, I cannot open them, I would like to have the option of using either software , does anyone know how to go back and reset the default option short of uninstalling ?, I would rather not uninstall as it was very difficult to install it the first time around

beejay2008,

In "My Computer" (or the equivalent under Vista), right-click on any Word document, click on "Open with..." and "Choose Program" and in the list select Word, then mark the check box "Always use this program to open this type of file". Repeat the operation for Excel and PowerPoint documents.

I would like to explore this issue further; we might be able to solve it. Please post it as a new thread in the Writer forum:

No need, I've moved the thread.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed. I guess squenson's advice should be the right one.

But, Hagar, the question I'm referring to is different than this one about changing default settings, so I thought it should belong in a new thread, and it would be specifically a Writer topic, whereas the one about changing default settings isn't.

I'm not so sure. I think I've already see that issue which is in fact a missing file type association when the file is opened from the mail client.

beejay2008, could you confirm? I guess that if you detach the file in a regular folder, you can open it from the Explorer.

Well, after reading many times the post, I'm rather lost and here are my guesses:
- beejay2008 wanted to open all documents with OOo and so has activated that option at startup.
- Then, he discovered that it doesn't work with .doc emailed files.
- Therefore, wants to deactivate the OOo file association to be able to choose MS Word for emailed documents.

=> The Open with dialog should do the trick either to set one or the other software as default for emailed documents I guess.
=> Else, to deactivate the setting, see that thread: [Solved] Changing all MS file extensions to open in OOo (especially JohnV's post) and uncheck the entries.
