I was mistaken about what Update Manager was offering me - once I used it to update the hyphenation package, all is well. The other (Ubuntu package) options were unchecked and don't trigger an update icon now.

tubegeek: you mean the Update Manager for Ubuntu, right? (Not OO. If OO, then this isn't an issue I've bumped into yet.) I'm not sure where to find it in the regular menus, but when the little orange icon comes up, you can right-click. One of the options (if I remember right) is preferences. You can turn off automatic notification when updates are available.

I want to install on Mint (Kde and Xfce desktops). I want to install it in /usr/local rather than /opt

Is that possible and what code is required?

With RPM, there is a -relocate option IIRC but for debs, I don't know.

I tryed to change in Tool -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Java
And add the /usr/bin/java already installed on my system, but it keeps saying "The folder you selected does not contain a java runtime environment. Please select a different folder.". It says the same if i try to setup the java provided by the rpms.

I am having the same problem. I looked on this thread and noticed someone else with a 64 bit system.
Mine is a 32 bit system, and everything is 32 bit binaries. That is definitely not the reason you are having this problem.

There is nothing wrong with the JREs installed by debian. OpenOffice Debian just doesn't recognize them.
I tried downloading Sun's JRE 1.6u6 and installing that, and it is still not recognized by openoffice.org.
It didn't recognize my jre 1.5 versions either, and I have about 4 installed in /usr/lib/jvm

Also, the "Add.." dialogs are different.
In 2.3.0 is a gtk dialog and it allows me to add the same path again without errors.
In 2.3.1 the dialog is more windowish and doesnt shows any file on the browsed directory, only shows dirs, and doesnt show any filtering information. It does not accept the previous path or any other.

There are 2 ways to change the file dialogs. One is by installing openoffice.org-kde
and the other is from the OpenOffice.org tools - options - general - use openoffice.org dialogs. Perhaps you are using the KDE or Gnome file dialogs instead (depending on what desktop you are using) when that is not checked. But that shouldn't matter one way or another, should it?

Anyway, I think there is a bug in the debian version of openoffice.org, in that it can not detect a valid JRE.

Bizarre, it seems the tools - options - general - use openoffice.org dialogs checkbox doesn't work anymore. And openoffice.org-kde which used to give me nice KDE file dialogs now supplies me with crappy qt file dialog instead.

I am a new user for Ubuntu. I had installer the Ubuntu 9.04 and then I follow the procedure in the tutorial for uninstall the office of Ubuntu and install the office of OpenOffice.org for Debian 32 bit.

I've unistalled the Ubuntu version. Then installed the Sun .deb version. It worked, but I am still having a crash when I use a .doc file (which is why I tried to rid myself of the Ubuntu version for Karmic).

Now, I've used Synaptic to remove all of the Sun OO files and am trying to re-install the Ubuntu ones so that I can use Writer until a proper fix is released. But, I have a problem. When I try to reinstall it via apt-get, my terminal gives me the following message:

openoffice.org-core is already the newest version.
openoffice.org-core set to manually installed.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
liblash2 libbinio1ldbl libsad2 libaudclient2 libresid-builder0c2a libftgl2
libcddb2 libaudutil1 libaudid3tag2 libmowgli1 libfluidsynth1 libprojectm2
libaudcore1 libsidplay2 libprojectm-data libmcs1
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

What do I do about the "manual install"?

No idea. Is it running again? Are you sure that you had removed all the OOo packages from the Sun version?

I have Sun 3.1.1 running on Ubuntu 9.10. Prior to that I had the Ubuntu version. Both run well and seemed quite stable/ I used Synaptic to uninstall their OpenOffice, told it to Uninstall completely, then installed the Sun version as the instructions in the tutorial. If when you are installing Sun version you get error messages, you have probably overlooked some Ubuntu OOo packages and should go back to Synaptic to remove these.

But the problem here is when you remove the Sun version to put back the Ubuntu version. I've never tried that neither. But the only reason why apt would detect a newer package should be that a package has not been removed.

Or perhaps do you need to clear the apt cache???

As far as I remember, Synaptic distinguishes between Ubuntu OOo and Sun OOo; one is called openoffice and the other is ooobasis3.1. As far as I remember the ooobasis3.1 flags the Ubuntu version. I know when trying to install the Sun version, I had to run Synaptic several times until I had removed everything flagged with ooobasis3.1 (but it might have been the other one). Then, and only then, could I get Sun version to install. Important to make sure there is no user profile left, in case it contaminates the new install.

I am new to linux and openoffice. I have tried to follow "[Tutorial] Installing OOo on Ubuntu, Debian and Co."
and have come accross a snag. Step 4, "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" does not work.
I get this error message;
"dpkg: can't open '/var/lib/dpkg/status': No such file or directory"

But I look in the folder and there are heaps of deb files sitting there.

What am I doing wrong?

Under linux all foldernames and filenames are case sensitive.

I have been entering the commands case sensitive correctly.

I have also ensured that the commands are being run in the uncompressed folder. The way I know this is by navigating to the folder with all the debs and right click, and open terminal this way. I also check the directory by typing "pwd."
Does it have something to do with java by any chance?

As far as I remember Puppy linux will install OpenOffice from a Quickpet link, without difficulty.

Can you check that it works with another package? I think that there is a problem with dpkg itself. Perhaps hasn't closed correctly.

dpkg is the application used by the system to install packages/applications. For example Synaptic is a mere frontend to have a graphical user interface, but it runs dpkg behind.

Try indeed to install a small application that is available in a .deb package.

Ok, thanks for you help guys. The overwhelming variations of linux (and puppy linux for that matter) confused me. I was looking for Synaptic Package Manager but couldn't find it. I then came across Puppy Package Manager which would be this variants equivalent.

Turns out I hadn't installed the gcc. How am I suppose to know to install such a package? And wouldn't it make sense to load it onto the operating system to begin with

Some flavors of GNU/Linux distro omit some packages depending on the their "specialization". That's why there are distros where you've to install packages delivered by default in other flavors.

But the dpkg system takes care of that and tell you when there is a missing package.

I'm wondering whether this should work with Oneiric, as I tried adding the two sources to my source list and it fails (404 ... not found).
I'm running Xubuntu 11.10 and has OOo 3.3.0 installed manually.
