OpenOffice temporary files in my documents

Post by jpharrold »

I keep getting a lot of Open Office temporary files in my 'My Documents' folder. Why is this happening and how can I change it? Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Paths allows you to specify the location of the temp folder to be used.

Temporary files? Like what? Can you give an example?

What is the setting under Tools > Options > OO.org > Paths > Temporary files?

... Oops--I see Gurkha's has already answered.

It's already set to C:/Documents and Settings/Home/Local Settings/Temp and there's a few temp files in there but i've still got a lot of temp files coming to 'my documents'. I've noticed in the past other temp files that weren't OO temp files that were showing up too in my documents. Maybe something else is going on. Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about files with a name like .~lock.filename.odx# (where 'x' is t, s, ... depending on the file type)? If so, it's a lock file to prevent other users to access the file.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

There's certainly something else going on. Are you sure that the temp path is set up correctly (OS-wise)? On the XP machine, I'm currently using, it's different and I don't think it has been tweaked. And if the path is correct, how about access rights?

No, here is a sampling of what I'm talking about. Also, they are all between 48-52MB in size and all were created at very odd hours of the morning, i.e. times when I would not even be awake or use OO. Under properties they all are supposed to open with OO, but then I click on them and an error message comes up saying the file is not a valid win32 application.

Never saw anything like this coming from OOo. Looks rather like garbage from a disk maintenance tool (supported by the hours you report).

Doesn't look like OOo temp files to me, either.

When I have a document open, OOo makes temp files like this:
  • $ ls -1 /tmp/sv3i5.tmp
    sv3i7.tmp
    sv3i9.tmp
    sv3ib.tmp
    sv3id.tmp
    sv3if.tmp
    sv3j6.tmp
    sv3j7.tmp
That's on Linux; it could be different on Windows, I suppose.

I'd suggest an indepth virus check, checking all files and boot sector; I use AVGfree when I need a virus checker - I found McAfee used bring my system to its knees, and Norton took over the entire machine.
