[Solved] Number pages starting with other than 1

Post by Scribbler »

I am writing a very long document. Rather than have to load the whole thing every time, I want to be able to load chapters separately so page numbering does NOT always need to start with '1'.
I've tried everything I can think of to start with, say, '34' but there seems to be no way to do that so that the following pages automatically number from a starting point like that.
Changing the '1' by hand to, say, '34' does not mean that the next page will auto-number as '35' . . . and so on.
Is there a way to start a new document, choose page numbering and then set Writer to begin with that number and then carry on?

I'll print all that info to try to make sense of it.
I've tried virtually everything I can think of, so the answer is hopefully so blindingly simple (and in those notes) that I'll kick myself for missing it, or it's so darned awkward that I'll simply not bother with page numbering each new chapter and having to start at '1' and wait until I convert to PDF, combine all the chapters and then add page numbering for the full document which is simplicity itself with PDF Element Pro.
Thanks for the info . . . now I'll make a coffee and see if I can find out what I must have missed.

On first page of each chapter put cursor in first para of text (not in header); /Format /Page : Text Flow tab, check "Breaks", "Type" Page, "Position" Before, "With Page Style" set as you wish (most likely Default) and "Page Number" to the value you wish.

This is one of the few forms of "Direct Formatting" which should be used. You may find it better to read on Master Documents in OpenOffice (in Writer manual)
