Cut & Paste Problem: Excel to Calc

I am having an "issue" with cut and paste between Excel and Calc.
I can easily select multiple cells and columns in excel, copy them and then paste them into Calc. The issue I have is that any cells containing more than 255 characters are cropped. Firstly I though it may be because I had a couple of [CR]'s in the cells, yet it cropped like half way through a line. I then counted the characters within the newly pasted cell. 255 in each of the cropped.
I couldn't find any limitation settings within Calc. ANY IDEAS?
At the moment I am individually cutting and pasting the contents of each cell. - ANNOYING!
Any help is muchly appreciated !
