[Solved] Unable to open .xls to edit

Post by KINGML »

I have several spreadsheet files in a folder and recently got a new computer to which I transferred the folder from my former computer via an externa hard drive. I have been able to open all the files and directly edit them except one which gives me the following message whenever I attempt to open it to edit:
Document file 'working%20copy%20revised%20results%202013.2014.2015.xls' is locked for editing by:
MichaelWong-PC/Michael Wong ( 21.02.2019 00:50 )
Open document for read only or open a copy of the document to editing.
With the following save 3 tabs to choose from Open Read-Only Open Copy Cancel.

If I choose open copy and edit the copy I am unable to replace the original with the edited copy.

How can I open and directly edit the original file like I can with all the other files in the folder?

I transferred the folder from my former computer via an externa hard drive.
Never work on aremovable media directly. Copy the file back to the document library of the internal HDD/SSD.
'working%20copy%20revised%20results%202013.2014.2015.xls'
Try to simplify the filename by rename it.
How long the full path string are? The operating system can not manage the too long path strings in some cases.

Or maybe the external drive is write-protected now.

Perhaps replace the %20 characters in the filename by an underscore "_".

Close all your open documents, set File Explorer to show hidden files if it isn't already set and see if there is a file like .~lock.yourfilename.xls# in the same directory as the problem file; if so, delete it and try again.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. I should clarify what I meant when I wrote "I transferred the folder from my former computer via an externa hard drive", for the benefit of Zizi64 (Tibor Kovacs). What I meant is that I copy and pasted from my old computer to the external hard drive then copied from the latter to the new computer and opened the file from the storage in the new computer.
If any of the suggestions resolves the problem I shall definitely post to the effect noting which one.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for why you should always work in and save files as .odt.

It applies to spreadsheet files too - never save as .xls - always save as .ods.
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

Special thanks to Robleyd for
Close all your open documents, set File Explorer to show hidden files if it isn't already set and see if there is a file like .~lock.yourfilename.xls# in the same directory as the problem file; if so, delete it and try again.
It worked perfectly did find the file that needed erasing and the original did open on command.

Namaste:
