Try the LibreOffice. It has a littlebit higher compatibility with the foreign, half-standardized fileformats, like the xlsx.

And please upload the sample file here.

1. File > Open > navigate to the file which should be saved to your PC. Open it.

Describe in detail what happens, giving any error messages etc.

I followed your instructions and it opens to the load page and the green bar moves a little bit then stops. No error messages nothing.

How long have you waited? It has been known for some Calc files to take a very long time to open - I can recollect one report of a Calc file taking an hour.

Because .xlsx is a compressed format the file in memory might be several times that in size; in turn, that suggests many cells and many formulae; I suggest trying to open the file and leaving computer alone (and I mean _alone_ - don't touch it) for about an hour. If it opens in that time, use /File /Save as and choose type .ods.
.

If the content of that file is not a few of pictures, but it is lots of numeric, textual data and formulas inside, then that is a so huge spreadsheet file. The conversion procedure at opening azt the file takes a lot of time. (The AOO and LO can work in the native formats only, therefore it is necessary to convert the foreign fileformats at the file opening.)

Can you share your file on a free file shating service?
