Please clarify selection modes in Libreoffice Calc

There are 4 selection modes in Calc: standard, extended, adding and block. I assume that the logic for each is the same as for selection mode in Writer. I have two questions about them:
How is block selection different from standard selection mode? I see no difference.
All of the selection modes seem to apply to cells but it appears that only the standard selection mode applies to text (within a cell). Is that correct?
Thank you.

In Writer, Block selection mode allows one to define and select a vertical block of text.

Yes, but this is Calc. I want to understand what it does in Calc. Could it have been a mistake to include it and no one noticed?

Look up "Selection modes in spreadsheets" in the Help file. It seems that it doesn't do anything special.

In the question, I did not clearly specify what I was talking about. I was referring to the four selection modes that appear when you right click on the selection field in the Task bar.

Sorry then I not understood your question, Which Taskbar and selection feature you meant?
Did you meant the Windows Taskbar, or a T
oolbar of the AOO/LO?
Please upload a screenshot about the feature.

- LO6 status bar selection mode

In LO this button offers 4 options on right-click for both components Calc and Writer. Block mode makes no sense with Calc and in fact it does nothing.
In AOO Calc there are 3 options which toggle by left click. F8 toggles between standard and expand. Shift+F8 toggles between standard and addition.
I never use these features because I prefer the usual keyboard navigation with Shift and Ctrl or mouse selection with Shift and Ctrl. They work with many different applications in similar ways.

Not sure why I didn't link to that post and thank you for pointing that out.

Oops. Sorry about that. I meant the LO Status bar, not Task bar. I would have included a screenshot but I can't get the latest version of the Snipping Tool to take a screenshot of a context menu, even with a delay.
Anyway, one of the responses in the linked Ask.LibreOffice post says that this issue is a bug and a bug report has been filed.
