[Solved] Data exceeds column width
I just want to display the data that fits in the column. It would be nice if the data were preserved and clicking on it caused it to be displayed. Can I do this?

Re: data exceeds column width
That depends on the kind of data. Text or formulas that return text show what they can in the cell, unless the cell next to it is empty, in which case the display appears to flow over into the empty cell.
With numbers or formulas that return numbers, OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc does not have that ability.
If you click on a cell, the contents of that cell show in the formula edit bar, located near the top of your screen, which may do for numbers that are entered, but shows the formula, rather than the result of the formula if the cell contains a formula.
If you right click on the column letter, there is an option for Optimal Column Width, which comes with a default setting that makes the column a little bit wider than is needed, but that number can be changed to 0 so that the column matches the smallest width needed for the piece of data that is the longest.
