[Solved] Spell check problem / confusion

Post by ghia589 »

Using 4.1.3 ; this morning, all words are underlined in wavy red. If I did this, I don't know how. If I go to tools > extension manager screen is blank. "Default language for documents" is set to english.

If I select the ABC button with the wavy red line, everything is underlined. If I unselect this button the red wavy lines go away but the regular spell check button highlights every word 1 at a time.

How do I get rid of this?

Thanks, Tom

Rename your OO user profile.

As your Forum .sig says you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures almost all spellcheck problems.

If you are actually using OO 3, replace the 4 in the above commands with 3.

This may have occurred because OO crashed, or because you powered down your computer before the OO housekeeping was complete and written to disk.

Thanks for response. I thought I "waited" long enough last night, but maybe not. I did have the "restore" function first this morning. When I copy & pasted in file explorer and hit enter, I got:

Windows can't find:

'C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\3'

Strange, but as I am typing all of the above, "AppData" is the only thing underlined in wavy red.

That did it! Thanks for everything. I have a 169 meg spreadsheet with lots of photos we have been adding to for 12 years so there were piles of underlined words.

Please make a dated backup immediately! Every file of importance ought be backed up at least after every editing session, with dated backups. Computers being computers, it only needs a power failure or the wind in the east, and you'll lose your file. A dated backup allows you go back to the previous editing session.

Thanks, I dump everything to an external hard drive every so often, but at least every night. One last dumb question: I can't remember / find how to mark post as answered.?

Go to first post in the thread, select Edit button top right and add [Solved] to start of Subject line, and press the radio button under green tick.

It's beside Green tick not under it. I might date myself by calling it a "radio button"; that was the term circa 1995

To clear up what might be a misunderstanding about spell checkers: presumably you were typing this in a text area in your browser, which uses its own spell checker which is a different thing from Writer's spell checker.

Thanks David. Just saw your comment. You are correct; I was typing right here on forum page! Never thought about it being "different"!

RoryOF: I only have 2 months left of being "only" 71 so I understand.

Again, thanks to you both. Great service.

Congratulations on being the youngest person in this converation :D

It would seem that you are no longer using OpenOffice 3.2 and probably no longer using Windows XP as mentioned in your signature. Having correct information there helps us to give you correct information about your problems. Please consider upgrading your signature to reflect what you are currently using.
