Re: How to hide gridlines
I finally found the right set of tools.
More steps and harder to find than the same things in Excel.

Re: How to hide gridlines
If you are accustomed to one tool, then a different tool always seems unintuitive or needlessly complex. When I have to make a graph in Excel, I am driven insane by the process needed to make a decent looking one. When I make one in R, a far more difficult software to learn, it seems easy because I am used to that. I suspect that once you use Calc for a while, it will seem just as easy to use as Excel seems now. However, if you are going to spend the rest of your life thinking "this is easier in Excel", then use Excel.

Re: How to hide gridlines
Just for other Forum members reading this post, the solution is:
From the Menu: Tools -> Options... -> OpenOffice Calc -> View -> Grid Lines
The above Grid Lines should NOT have a check mark, if you do NOT want to see any grid lines on the screen.

Re: How to hide gridlines
There is also an extension allowing to hide/show the gridlines per sheet.
(The setting is not saved to the file. The command needs to be added manually to a menu and/or toolbar.)
See https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/gridlines.
