I am working on an iMac Sierra 10.12.2 Open Office 4.1.0 I have checked show gridlines in preferences, but they do not show consistently.

HAven't posted before, don't know if the screen capture I dragged on will display. Please let me know how to add it if it doesn't display.

You need to upload your screen capture file; the Upload tab is below the Submit button in the Full Editor and Post Reply screens.
It my be that the grid line are too fine to show; try adding borders to your cells - you can change their colours/weights (/Format /Cells: Borders tab)

As soon as I work on the spreadsheet the gridlines/borders disappear. This makes working on it very difficult as there are blank cells and more info to the right.

Have solved my problem. Grid under Preferences gives the dotted grid which has nothing to do with the grid I wanted to work with in spreadsheet. Under format Cells I can get border options I want. Problem arose when I copied a row from one sheet to another and "from" sheet did not have borders set. All working fine now.
