In edit mode go to data range and tick "First column as label"

thanks cambirder i can't seem to make it work.
i've got 4 columns..a,b,c,d..i am plotting column d and have that range on the y axis..
when i do what you say.. putting 'First column as label' which is what i want as that is a date column..the chart insists on changing the scale of the y axis to that of column B!!..what gives?

donc

how do i change the x axis ... from a row number to a column of data...?
If both the x- and the y-values come from data in the spreadsheet, you have to use an X-Y chart.

First you have to do Format > Chart Type, and set the type to "XY".

Then Format > Data Ranges > Data Series and set a range for the x-values.

It sounds like you are trying to graph an xy chart using something like a line chart.
Try it with an xy-chart and see what happens
