automatic height adjustment

Post by apu »

I have a xls file with very long texts in the cells.
I'd like to be able to adjust the width of a column and when I do that I want the height of the cells to adjust so the entire text is shown.

How can I make OO calc do this?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Right-click the top of the column, select Format Cells, go to the Alignment tab, and select the 'Wrap text automatically' option.

If you question has been answered please go to your first post and use the Edit button, and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can also select the green tick icon.

No, that doesn't solve the problem.
I check that box but the text does not alter the height of the box so I can see the whole text when making the column smaller.

I try the file, with the text in B3 cell. I make it smaller, and I get a little red triangle in the right margin of the cell and the cell size is not adjusted.

Yes, you will. You can make the cell narrower than the width of the longest word, but once you do that you get the red triangle to indicate that clipping has occurred. That's what's supposed to happen. If the cell is narrower than the word, there isn't much else that could happen.

Sorry TheGurkha, I think you misunderstand apu. The linebreak adjusts automatically with your setting - but the vertical height of the cell does not adjust - not for me, at least.
Apu, I think such a feature would require a dedicated setting because it can reshape your spreadsheet quite dramatically. I don't think it exists.

I stand corrected! It works for me too now. I dunno what prevented it from working the other day or what I did wrong.
Sorry TheGurkha, and thanks for proving it :)
