Select a cell with the symbol, choose /Format /Cells; on te Numbers tab, what format is selected in the Category column?

Could this be a keyboard configuration issue (or even a hardware issue—stuck key)? I know some input methods allow entering numeric codes for symbols/characters from the keyboard.

Could also be a "rogue" autocorrect item. In that case, undo will revert to what you typed, before autocorrection.

See Tools - Autocorrect options.

The Norwegian function name for TODAY() is "IDAG()". No problem with that in Calc. MS Excel autocorrects to separate words, "I DAG()", because agglutination is wrong (though common) for that term. When I enter the formula, Excel tells me that I have made a mistake in the formula and asks whether to correct the function name (back to what I initially wrote).

Don't know, but is
Then you have the number treated as a text-string,positioned left in your cell.
