I understand that I can select all cells containing a value but how do I select the whole row of each cell?
I am trying to select all rows containing "Tesco" and group them all together. then do the same with rows containing "Amazon".
the only way I can find to do it is using standard filter but then that deletes everything apart from those rows

Re: how to select rows containing value
The Filter options do NOT delete any data. What they do do, is to display the data that matches the filter(s) specified.
I'm concerned that the Data -> Filter options may not be the same for you based on the version number in your signature.
2.0 is extremely out of date. If you are running 2.0, then I suggest you upgrade to 4.1.2 (the latest version of OpenOffice)
After you upgrade, or if you are already running a more up-to-date version, please use the User Control Panel link located near the top left of this page to get to the area for editing your forum signature.
Re-reading your post, makes it sound like you'll need to do two filterings. Just remember to use Data -> Filter -> Remove in between

Re: how to select rows containing value
In order for the Remove option to be available, your active spreadsheet must have a current filtering active
You have indicated that you know how to set a Data -> Filter with the Standard filter.
Set a standard filter, then with the results showing, go to Data -> Filter -> Remove in order to bring your entire sheet back to view.
If you want to keep the filtered information, there is a Copy option in the More Options section.
Please note that we recommend using the Forum signature line to report the OS and Office (Open or Libre) versions.
Sometimes it can make a difference in what works for a solution.

Re: how to select rows containing value
Ayman - from reading your first post it sounds to me like you want to do a sort!
If you happen to have a filter on at the moment (ie drop down arrows on your top row) go to menu\data\filter & click autofilter to get rid of it.
If you have a header row on your table highlight the cell in column 'A' below that row otherwise A1
SHFT+CTRL+End (this highlights your entire data)
Menu\data\sort
the 'sort by' box will have your rightmost column in it, change that to the column with Amazon and Tesco's, in it.
click 'ok'
