Conditional formatting that doesn't work as intended

Post by PeterJS »

I have an annoying problem with conditional formatting that goes like this:
I have a cell (1) that evaluates a formula that again depends on an evaluation of the disputed cell (2).. that contains a date.
If the date (2) is bigger or equal to today() it (1) it returns a '1' that is the basis of the evaluation of (2) which is then formatted with background and font, and THAT works a-ok....
I'm trying to set up a condition 2 that then locks the cell if a similar criteria is met .. and that DOESN'T work.
WTF? It's purely cosmetic but it annoys the sh*t out of me when I can't see WHY it won't work and I've decided that this is what I want ...
work damnit!
Little help please

Conditional formatting can be complex. The "condition" can be for a cell's contents or a general formula about other cells. Using the menu option opens the conditional format dialogue box which allows for only 3 conditions.

The conditions are evaluated in serial order and the first condition that is met is the one which chooses the style for that condition. It sounds as if you want to order the second combined condition for locking the cell in a way which allows the first condition to work. You need 2 styles; one for formatting only and one for formatting and locking.

So for example:
Condition 1 Your two date logical formulae if both true locks and formats the cell.
Condition 2 Your date logical formula only if true turns cell background red or whatever

Note the order: the two have to be evaluated first and rejected if false before the one can be evaluated.

I hope this helps

aha .. I thought they where evaluated separately in a serial manner that wound up getting the result you mention in the second paragraph, but I see now that it doesn't need be so desperately annoying as I found it at first, I'll try out the method of two circumstances where the first (which I now use to apply formatting, and the second to lock at a later date than condition one) gets rejected, I just recond that it worked in a strait out serial fashion.. but I see now that it isn't; I need to flip it a bit on its head.

I don't get it .. the locking still doesn't seem to work
Is this because the cells baseformatting isn't locked or something else all together .. annoyed again

I confirm that the "protected" format style appears not to be transferable by conditional format. Sorry I may have misled you if there is no workaround. Can any macro specialists out there lend a hand?

as I stated; in essence it's a minor cosmetic issue. But that said it REALLY would be nice if there was some sort of workaround that made it work.
I go nuts when there's something I want to work, can't see any reason why it DOESN'T, and still it does NOT
Have no patience for this sort of issues
and btw. ... isn't there some sort of way to inspect the 'content' the typography's available in the conditional format window? a bit annoying that you have to create a whole new for even a minor change, and can't get rid of the old ones

You can inspect the formats by pressing F11 and rightclicking a format and select modify.
LibreOffice provides a better overview of which conditional formatting a sheet contains.

If you want specific suggestions, attach a sample document with some sample data, and tell us what conditions should produce what formatting.

well, the problem is only the locking of cells based on the same sort of conditionality as the coloring/bolding of letters. But as mentioned is really only a minor cosmetic issue, and if I REALLY want the locking to take place I can also just get the finger out and do it manually
Would be neat if the two could/would take place automatically though .. I mean; why DO something yourself if you can get it DONE ;-)
but whatever .. case closed and thanks to those who browsed by and gave a hand .. or attempted to at least :)

I couldn't get conditional locking working either. It would mean that a cell might get locked depending on which value you enter, without being able to correct it if necessary.
