Using OpenOffice 4.0 on both OSX and W7. OO4 will not properly import a Numbers application created XLS document. Fonts are garbage. Same XLS file WILL import properly with LibreOffice and MS Excel. XLS files moving other direction (FROM MS Excel, LibreOffice and OpenOffice) import fine in OSX Numbers application. It's ONLY XLS files saved or exported from OSX Numbers application that do not open in OO4.

Thoughts?? Filter settings? Font choice (tried many UTF choices)

It may be that the file is exported from Numbers as a plaintext XML file, instead of the "packaged XML" that constitutes a proper Excel file. That has been the cause with several XLS files from other sources. Try to change the filename extension (aka "file type") to ".xml".

I suspect that AOO selects import filter from extension, while the other applications you mention are more "content sensitive".
