.xls file opened in Write, can't recover

I mistakenly opened an .xls file with the Write module which brought up a window for the ASCII filter options which were set at:
Character Set:Western Europe
Default Fonts: Times New Roman
Language: English

When the file opened, it displayed lines of ############################################################ in a text window.

Even though I did not save the file, when I try to open it in Calc, it goes to Write with the same result.

Is it possible to recover the xls file?

If you open xls from write, it will open in calc automatically, if not damaged.
If OOo can not recognize supported file type, it will open in write, with conversion tool.
In your case the xls file was damaged before you tried to open.
In such case not so much to do.
What OOo version and OS you use?

If file not contain sensitive information you can upload, to this forum and we will try to open it.
