Remove one 'data series label' from legend

Post by SoraData »

Background: I have transferred data and associated charts created in Microsoft Excel 2003 into Open Office 3.

1 – How do I remove all but one ‘data series label’ in the legend?
[I have 5 total data series in the legend, which represent essentially the same type of data (say, a radio-marked bird), and therefore need only one 'data series label' in the legend. In Excel 2003, I could individually select and delete 'data series labels' from the legend with ease.]

I have been able to remove the label names from the legend through the following steps:
Highlighted/Selected inner chart area
Right clicked
Chart Data Table window appeared
I deleted unwanted labels from boxes at top of Data Table window

However the symbols for deleted labels remain. How do I remove the unwanted symbols? (I'm not sure I interpreted your suggestion to "remove it from the sheet" correctly.)

Calc-charts are very straight-forward. They simply plot cell-values in a spreadsheet. The same type of chart can be used in other documents where they plot data from an attached table which is usually invisible. There is not much to do like "display this with the exception of that but only if ...".
If I don't like to see a certain label in a spreadsheet-bound chart I would simply remove the corresponding text-value from the respective cell.

I'm doing a little grave digging here, but people doing Google searches for this topic might find this useful:

While I was unable to remove a data series from the legend using Open Office I simply copied the image of the legend and cropped the unwanted figures out of the legend. Steps:
1.) Place all the data series which you do not want to show up on the legend at the end of the "chart data table". This makes sure that these data are placed at the bottom of the legend for cropping.
2.) Right click the legend and select "cut"
3.) Open Paint or a similar program and paste the picture of the legend into the program
5.) Crop the unwanted data series out of the picture of the legend
6.) Right click -> copy the trimmed legend
5.) Return to your graph, paste the cropped legend in the document and place it where you want it on the graph
8.) (Optional) I find it helpful to double click the picture-> wrap -> through. This make sure the picture can be placed where I need it.
