Post by Nitrocowboy »

MultiplicationWelcome beginner. What is your question or comment?
Please try to briefly and clearly tell us: What you want, What you tried, and What happened.mn multip

Yes I am a beginner and I am having problems with having one column multiply by the value in another column and the answer come up in a third. When I tried the formula (B)X(C) it comes with #NAMES in the. column that I am trying to get the answer in. Can you give the right formula that I need to do the calculations correctly?

You can't multiply whole columns, only cells (single values). E.g.
A1: 12
B1: 2
C1: =A1*B1 shows the result: 24

Note the syntax for multiplication: m*n not mXn

You type in the first funtion e.g. C1=A1*B1 and then you click on C1, the black box with a dragging point on the right-hand side appears, and you drag it as far down the C column as you need to go. This copies the formula down the column by adapting it to each row automatically

Yes you can multiply entire columns at once. This is for Google but also works for Open Office Calc :

Start with "multiplication formula example" then move through "multiply across multiple rows" . If you want to multiply one column by one number, copy that number, select (blue out) a column next to the column set to be multiplied. Paste. That number should appear next to each number. 3rd column will create entire set multiplied by that repeated number.

Surprised I could not find this within Open Office.
