[Solved] Edit, then save, an Excel spreadsheet
A friend sent me an Exel spreadsheet to work on. I am using Open Office on my Mac using Big Sur 11.5.2. I have made changes to the spreadsheet including new columns. When I look at it in page view none of my updates appear, and I can’t print the revised spreadsheet.
Help please

Re: Edit an Exel spreadsheet
Is it an OOXML .xlsx or an obsolete .xls type file?
Can you upload it here?

Re: Edit an Exel spreadsheet
OpenOffice _cannot_ save in XLSX format. It will Save As in .xls (Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP) format.

Save in either .xls format or .odt format. Since about 2007 all MS Office versions since then can read and save in .odt/.ods format, but their users don't usually know how to tell them to read such files. This is the vendor lock-in policy.

Re: Edit an Exel spreadsheet
Just to clarify.
Should I save the spreadsheet as I originally got as XLS. or ODT, then make changes and re-save, or just save as XLT or ODT when I am through making changes?
Sorry to be a pest but this is making wonky!

Re: Edit an Exel spreadsheet
The spreadsheet file extension of the ODF (Open Document Format) file formats is the .ods. Try to save your .xls or xlsx documents into .ods format.
Or you can try the LibreOffice. It can save into OOXML file formats (.xlsx for the Microsoft spreadsheets).
Note: never was and never will be 100% compatibility between the different file formats (even there is not between the .xls and the .xlsx).
You always will lose some formatting properties (or sometimes some content!) when you convert the file formats of your document.

ODT is for word processor. You can save as ODS.hbill@yahoo.com wrote:Just to clarify.
or just save as XLT or ODT
This format is understandable by MS-Excel since 2016 edition.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Microsoft and AOO/LO files for a description of differences and for why you should always work in, and save Writer files as .odt, Calc files as .ods, Impress files as .odp, etc.
