ApacheOpenOffice vs LibreOffice

Post by Powderdog »

Let me ask a dumb question. Is it OK to create a spreadsheet in Apache and then open and edit it with Libre or would that cause some problems ? (in other words, open a spreadsheet in one program that was created in the other.)

Both use the Open Document Format so the broad answer is yes, both can open documents created by the other.

There are some functions provided by LibreOffice Cal that are not available in OpenOffice Calc; REGEX is one that comes to mind. Also, recent versions of LibreOffice save documents using ODF version 1.3 by default, where AOO uses ODF version 1.2 extended; AOO does not yet use ODF version 1.3. This will trigger warnings in AOO about 'later versions'. Of course, LO can be configured to save in 1.2 extended format via Tools | Options.

I think that there are also some functions that are available in LO Calc that are not in AOO Calc. Don't know what happens when you open in AOO a file made with LO including such functions.

A quick experiment with a sheet containing the REGEX function returns an error #NAME? in AOO Calc.

IFERROR is missing in AOO and DATEDIFF.
LO has lots of Excel compatibility functions, for instance as CEILING.XCL, CEILING.MATH in addition to the regular CEILING function. These variants are used when importing/exporting to certain versions of MS Excel documents.
LO Calc functions can deal with shell patterns in addition to regex patterns which is a lot more practical and compatible with Excel.
