[Solved] How To Get A Comma Delimited Text File into Calc?

Post by abrogard »

I am trying to download data from AERS and they don't give a spreadsheet option, only delimited text.

I can't find the way to get it into a spreadsheet.

Can someone help, please?

Did you try File | Open? You may need to change the file extension to .csv to get Calc to properly recognise it.

When opening the file, Calc will present a text import dialog; make sure you check Detect special numbers.

You can also open blank Calc document and use the menu item Insert -> Sheet From File
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint

Thank you guys. I got it. I didn't find the 'insert sheet from file' option, still can't see it. Got it with opening that 'file type' thing at the right. never thought of that. and picking 'txt'

hmm. over 3000 adverse effects of the vaccinations in the usa there.

thanks for the help. :)

I didn't find the 'insert sheet from file' option,
It is available from the Insert menu option - see below.

If you are looking at the data I think you are looking at, the numbers do not represent adverse effects caused by vaccination. They show adverse events after vaccination. Imagine that Have a Nice Day stickers were handed out to tens of millions of people, starting with the elderly. You track what happens to those people for N weeks after they get a sticker and you find that some die and some become ill. You report these finding to the Centers for Sticker Control and they post these as Adverse Sticker Effects. Only careful analysis of the rate of these adverse effects against an appropriately chosen non-stickered population could address the question of whether the stickers cause any adverse effects. Simply crediting all of the adverse effects to the stickers would be wrong.

Oh yes, totally agree. I'm only just beginning to take a look at it all - have just downloaded my first search and have never accessed their site before. and I'm doing it in order to check things such as those you point to, to see for myself exactly in order to avoid misrepresenting the whole thing.

Here's my screenshot. Perhaps I'm going blind but I don't see it on mine.

How'd you get your arrow on your screenshot - with much juggling... into gimp or something, process, export? or you've got a quicker simpler thing you could tell us about?

I have four images of arrows - left, right, up, down - which I use for this purpose.

Open GIMP, open the image I want to emphasise, open relevant arrow image and copy it, paste into target image and drag to position. Done.

As for the differences in menus, my first thought is that your menu has been customised via Tools | Customise.

Well I didn't do it. But I've followed your hint and I've 'undone' it. It is now there as an option. I didn't know about that feature.

Not too crowded there at Murbko ?

Depends if you count the rabbits and cockatoos or not ;-) Certainly not as populated as say, Adelaide.

I'll assume the coat hanger, not the Story bridge well north of there. Interesting trivia; the road on both bridges is named the Bradfield Highway presumably after the consulting engineer for both bridges.

Ah, that bridge; but a stone's throw downstream; well about 100 km by water. There would be some 19K more people there than here.

And yes, there is the odd family of roos around, mostly to be seen in the orchard adjacent to my place.

They should be a tourist attraction round here. They bask in the sunlight, scratching themselves in paddocks by the side of the road. :)

Good to show the yanks, I think: we grow paddocks of rocks and paddocks of roos.

Indeed, you're correct. Looking at LO 6.4.6.2 I see the same as OP's screenshot. One reason I guess for members to keep the info in their signatures up to date :-) As I'm not a regular LO user, I missed that.

And for the record, in LO 6, Insert Sheet from File can be found in the Sheet menu option.

Limitations of AERS

Does not ensure that the adverse event was a result of the product
Does not contain enough information for the evaluation of a reported event or medication error
Not all adverse events or medication errors are reported to the FDA
Duplication of report is possible as both, consumers and sponsors, can report the same adverse event to the FDA

AERS is a very useful canoly-in-the-coal-mine warning system but very dodgy for real analysis .

Yep. It is what it is. And a lot of that has to do with the use to which it and it's 'warnings' are put - what actions they initiate.
It's a canary is a good way of putting it. If the canary in your coal mine fell over dead you wouldn't simply ignore it would you?
