Open spreadsheet (XLS format) with Hebrew text

Post by Motim »

Hello,
New to this forum, new OpenOffice user.
Hello again.
When I try to open a calc spreadsheet (mainly downloaded) which has Hebrew text inside, it appears as giberish. So first I open it with Microsoft Office (Excel), save it as ".xls" file, then open it in the program and the text is Hebrew.
Later I can edit, add, whatever in Hebrew and it works.
Note: OS system basically is US-English, Hebrew language added.
How to make it work ?
Answers will be appreciated
Thanks
Motim

What you open is propably not a Calc spreadsheet. What do you download?

Hello,
Thanks for some answer.
The file is a Calc Spreadsheet, yes. Attached a screenshot of part of it.
You can see the giberish insted of Hebrew.

Nobody can tell without having the actual file at hand. Possibly you want to replace OpenOffice with LibreOffice which handles foreign file formats much better. https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/li ... penoffice/

The one and only application which will ever be able to handle all pitfalls of xls is Excel and nothing but Excel. This is intentional and no other software can be fully compatible with anything that does not want to be compatible.

Hello,
Thanks.
I am trying "LibreOffice", but it has a bug in calc spread-sheet since version 7.
The bug is resizing columns when page is in right to left format, the body of the column is resized and the column's heading is not resized with the column.
In left to right format, the resize columns is OK.
Its a pity, as I started to like the "OpenOffice".

Apart from the column resize error, does LibreOffice interprete the content of the xls correctly?

Do you know the issue number of the column resize problem? I can't find this issue in the bug tracker system.

Hello,
Thanks.
Answer 1: Yes.
Answer 2: Started a post "https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... ffice-710/", then posted a bug report on the site mentioned there.
My bug report was deleted as a duplicate, see 139241 in the bug list which was posted by someone else (not me), but still its the same issue.

So which bug is more serious? The one with the misaligned headers (until screen repaint) or a program which fails completely to interprete the file content?

The LibreOffice bug will be fixed as soon as somebody takes the time do work on it. Since you posted a duplicate, you will be notified by email when the status of the original bug is changing. There is some activity on the Right-to-Left issues and this particular bug has been introduced between versions 6 and 7. It was overlooked when fixing/improving something else. I think, the project could benefit from volunteers being able to test release candidates in non-Latin languages.

There are bad chances that the OpenOffice bug will ever be fixed because of a serious lack of developers.

Hello,
This is just for your info.
After a long time which the problem about resizing columns in "LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet" was asleep (after all, my post about the problem was marked as duplicate). I started to get about 5 to 6 e-mails from "Bugs.DocumentFoundation.org".
I wonder what was the trigger for that.
However, there is a new version 7.1.3, downloaded and installed it to test - the problem still there.

Have you checked the bug report?
Usually adding a comment (even merely marking a report as duplicate) tells that other users are impacted and that the issue may be worth tackling.
Perhaps bumping the report has made some devs have a look and raised some interest.
