[Solved] My customers can't open XLSX files I create
[Solved] My customers can't open XLSX files I create
Hello,
I use openoffice 4.1.7 and windows 10.
Usually I get a lot of Excel files with .xlsx fomat.
I download them, make changes and save them in the same format means .xlsx
but lately when I save the files, and send them to my customer, they have difficulties to open the file and had to find other way to send the xlsx file to them.
Tonight I downloaded the xlsx file and changed the content, then saved the document in xlsx format and tried to upload it, but I got error.
Then I thought it might be the file fomat, then I upladed the original xlsx file, and it worked.
Dose it mean that my Openoffice has a issue?
please, look at the film:

I add files to be checked if necessary.

Re: I get erro
Whilst OpenOffice can open them, it cannot, and never has been able to, save spreadsheets in .xlsx format. The content of your file test3.xlsx appears to be a .ods file. How do you "save them in the same format means .xlsx"?
Cheers

NEVER rename the file extensions manually!
The Test3.xlslx file is an ODF (.ods) type document really.
Use the "File - Save as" function for the conversion - if it needed anyway.
But always better to use the real international standard ODF file formats, what is the native file format of the LO and AOO, and the Excel can open it (maybe it can open only the the 1.1 version of the ODF file format)
The newest LO Calc saves the documents into the 1.3 version of the ODF by default.

Said differently, the question is: how can you save in .xlsx since AOO cannot save in that format?

I thought I can just change the .xls to .xlsx, then it goes.Hagar Delest wrote:Said differently, the question is: how can you save in .xlsx since AOO cannot save in that format?
But it looks that it is not correct.
Any suggestion?

Do nothing. Keep the .xls extension. Every version of Excel handles xls properly.

No, it doesn't work like that. If you buy a Lada car and replace the marking at the back by Ferrari, even with a nice sticker, it won't change the car.
Same for digital files.
If you really need to work with .xlsx, either use LibreOffice or buy MS Office.
But remember that .xlsx has never been designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office. That's vendor lock-in policy.

Re: My customers can't open XLSX files I create
To change format of a file, it is necessary to apply internal filters to do so. To do this, use /File /Save As, select the desired format from the File Type dropdown, and ensure "Automatic file name extension" is checked. If you want others using MS Office to read your files, best to select Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls) format, although in theory MS Office can read .ods format (OpenOffice's native format); most MS Office users will not know how to cope with an .ods file, so sending them an .xls file will be less hassle for you.
