[Solved] Move multiple entire rows

Postby stacie » Sun Oct 18, 2020 12:25 am

I have a few hundred rows. I want to take about 25 consecutive rows and move them about 10 rows past the end of that current run. If I try to cut/paste, it requires me to have the same number of blank rows to paste into in order not to overwrite something. I don't want to have to go create the correct amount of blank rows each time. I want to *preferably* move the rows where I want them, or cut them and just insert them where I want them. I don't see a way to do either. Please assist if you have methods for either.

EDITED to say Bill pointed out a solution for the cut/paste situation without overwriting other rows. Now I'm just wondering about moving rows...is it a thing that can be done in bulk like that?

Thx, Stacie

Try Cut/Paste Special. The Paste Special dialog has an option to shift cells down.

Thanks, Bill. I didn't catch that option previously. That'll work. I am still interested in whether moving rows is a thing, so I'll leave the thread unsolved for that possibility.

It is possible to move rows using drag and drop. I found this using the forum Search:

It is possible to copy multiple rows if you filter them.

I'm not sure what filtering adds, but I know I can copy (or cut) multiple rows. Per Bill's recommendation, I learned that paste special allows me to paste them without overwriting any others. I'm now wondering about just moving them.

It also works when multiple consecutive rows are selected. No filtering is required to select consecutive rows.

OK, I made a discovery...the cursor will change when one row is selected, then hold down Alt and move cursor to edge of selection. For multiple, it doesn't change the cursor for me, so I thought it wasn't working. It does work...it's just incognito for some reason. So...all things solved. Thanks Bill!
