No to the first question, and we use Chrome, but the attempt to install the dictionary was after the problem.

Hello Sirs,
Followed your instructions to the letter, but at step 8, there was a + sign in front of the config_backend_cleaner that instantly disappeared and the RUN button was disabled. I am sure I am doing something wrong somewhere, but where? and what?
Much obliged for your help.

BTW had to install the JRE before getting anywhere

Hello,
Further to my previous postȘ After tinkering with the macro file got it to run and produced a log (see attached) problem not fixed though ...

Are you absolutely certain you followed the instructions exactly? Hundreds of other people have used the macro without problems so it is almost certain that you are doing something wrong. Try again.

If it still does not work then

1. Reset your profile - see Resetting the user profile

2. Uninstall all your dictionaries by Tools > Extension Manager. Highlight each dictionary in turn > Remove.

3. Reinstall the dictionaries you want by clicking Get more extensions on line ..., and searching for the dictionaries you want.

Thank you John_Ha,
I went the easier and brute force way of scratching the "user" folder ... after I restarted OpenOfice I was only prompted to enter my name and, when the document opened, it was all cool. I am afraid this is going to repeat upon each upgrade (I already had this issue twice)... can't you get a developer to fix this for good? When I was coding for mainframes we found the root cause and put in code that resolved it permanently. Did IT change that much since  ? Coding is coding is coding after all.
Still, love and use and recommend your product and always will

Regrettably there is still no cure for user problems :-) The cause is often shutting down the OS before the system has had time to write cached data to disk.

It does not happen on upgrade.

It is being looked at but at present the advice is "Don't be too hasty to slam the laptop lid shut while AOO is still writing data to disk".

It's not "our" product. We are users like you.

The macro provided to correct the error with Version 4.1.4 and Version 4.1.5 worked like a charm.

It does involve following the instructions of creating the appropriately identified sub-folder, downloading the macro within a zip file, extracting the file and placing it in the earlier identified sub-folder.

Shame this was required but definitely resolved the issue.

Want to search for the zip file <<config_backend_cleaner.py.zip>>. You will need the instructions from this posting.

Rename your OO User profile:
shutdown OpenOffice and then open any folder. In the address bar near the top enter
%appdata%\openoffice\4\
That should take you to a folder containing a folder called user. Rename that to user_old and restart OpenOffice. You should get the registration screen

FYI, there were bugs with SpellCheck in AOO 3.4.1, including installation of extra incompatible SpellCheck dictionaries. If you're still using AOO 3.4.1, I'd recommend complete removal using Revo Uninstaller, then installation of AOO 4.1.5.

If you added your words to a custom dictionary, you can bring that forward from the old profile to the new; this is why we advise to "rename" rather than "delete" the old profile. A custom dictionary lives in the Wordbook directory of the old profile. When you move it to the new profile, remember to select it in /Tools /Options /Language settings /Writing aids :User defined dictionaries. You should do the move with OpenOffice closed, else it may not see the added dictionary until next startup.

The red wiggly lines have gone, but now it doesn't check the spelling at all.
