Thanks to RoryOF, a discussion on the mailing list revealed that a new extension for word count display in the status bar was available.
The extension now in the extension repository:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.o ... controller
Please choose the correct version for your operating system. If you are not sure about this, don't do it!
Some reports indicate that on first startup after installing this extension, OpenOffice will hang. If so, force it to close (use TaskManager in Windows, you can invoke it with Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Subsequent startups are as normal.
If you select text, the count for the selection, whether single or multiple selection, is shown in addition to total word count.
The utility did not appear to affect speed of file opening (tried on 100,000 word file).
The enhancement request is still open, don't hesitate to add a comment, this extension should definitively be integrated in the main code.

All I can see is:
Has the project moved to somewhere else? The requested URL /git/downloads was not found on this server. That’s all we know.

Yes, in the extension repository, that's a good thing.
I've updated the link.

Re: Live Word Count in Statusbar
Thanks! I have tested it. No problem on first start. With a ≈700,000 word file, no noticeable performance degradation. Of course, such a functionality out-of-the-box would be nice (word count in the status bar is implemented in LO, thus, can be ported to AOO).

Re: Live Word Count in Statusbar
This extension works well, with one caveat; the countable selected text seems to be limited to 30,000 characters (not 32K characters, as far as I can ascertain!); this amounts, in my tests, to a selection of about 5,000 words. However, the OpenOffice built-in /Tools /Word Count facility will count larger selections than that on the rare occasions this is needed.
I came across this limitation in attempting to divide a long chapter (about 7,500 words) into two shorter chapters.

Re: Live Word Count in Statusbar
I installed this on two computers but see no word count on either status bar. Am I missing something?

Re: Live Word Count in Statusbar
As far as I remember one needs to restart OO (and Quickstarter?) after installing this extension.

I did close and reopen OO, and I don't see QuickStart in my processes or services. I'm using Windows 10, btw.

I cannot answer for Windows10, but it showed up on all my linux computers after a restart.
