[Solved] No dictionary

Post by neiljacobson »

There seems to be no dictionary. I tried reinstalling Openoffice. I verified that the language option is English (USA). What should I do?

/Tools /Options /Language settings /Languages, set English(USA) from the dropdown on "Default languages for documents : Western" . Press Ok, and restart OpenOffice.

The dictionary for English is installed. See the check mark in the dictionaries list. Do you start new documents by right clicking in Windows Explorer (thecWindows file manager, not the web browser)? If so, tryvstarting new documents in Writer instead.

True, but there is a dictionary. My bet is on Libre starting a doc with a wrong template that blocks language bindings.

Tick Check spelling as you type. All other settings are fine. Make sure that when you type something, the status bar (bottom of the window) displays the language, in this case English.

First please confirm that you start new docs that way. If so, you can't fix it, all you can do is start new docs in Libre itself.

Please make a dummy document and upload that here as an attachment to your next message. (Click Upload attachment below the text area where you enter your message. Then do the obvious.)

Okay, opened it, and it looks fine - when I enter a misspelled word, it is duly marked. By the way, you should make it a habit to save in the native format of LibreOffice - odt for Writer.

It's probably time for the old trick to solve weird problems - Reset your user profile. Click here for help how to do that.

I have the same problem but with the Spanish language. I try all the above ways and I can't establish the correct dictionary. I will try to uninstall and try again with the tips shared here.

I'm using OpenOffice in Ubuntu 19.04.

Just reset the user profile, see mybprevious post. Reinstalling won't help here.

If all else fails, see if [Tutorial] Spell check and Language configuration provides useful information.
