I'm not a very good typist, but often when I am typing text in OpenOffice, I apparently hit a wrong combination of keys. I'm not aware that I am doing it until I get a popup box, most often the one with options for inserting bullets and numbering or for default formatting. When this happens, the cursor moves away from where I was typing.

What am I doing wrong and how can I prevent this from happening?

I'm using OpenOffice 4 with Windows 10.

You are probably hitting the Ctrl key instead of or as well as the shift key. They are your fingers - _you_ have to control them. Or change to a different keyboard, perhaps with bigger keys.

Or get smaller fingers?

Keyboard with larger keys are available for users with arthritis and other illnesses. They are sometimes used in cold locations, where keyboard input may be required from users wearing gloves.
