[Solved] Importing Macro & Short Cut
[Solved] Importing Macro & Short Cut
I recently received an odt. document from a correspondent. I quickly discovered that the macros (and associated keyboard shortcuts) that work in documents I create, do not work in this one. Is there a simple way in which this can be arranged, or would I do better to create a new document on my computer and paste the contents of the 'foreign' item?
I did look existing instructions on importing macros but found them puzzling.

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
- where are stored the macros? (in your documents or in the MyMacros library?)
- what is the scope of the shortcuts? (document or global?)
- how (where from) did you open the received documents? (Never open them directly form a mail service. Download it before.)
- is the received document protected?

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
The answer may be to open a blank document using your standard (macro included) template, then /File /Insert to insert the new document into it.

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
Thank you Zizi and Rory. Sorry about the delay in responding.
The document sent as an attachment to an email, is an .odt file and, after downloading it, I have been able to edit it and insert comments … so I don't think it is 'protected'.
I would like to get my macros and shortcuts organised, and thought I knew where they all are stored … clearly I do not. I have macros stored in My Macros, and they are accessible in all documents I have checked (so far) … so I would say they are "global". However, wanting to be able to: i) Change text colour to red; ii) Change text colour to red with a single line strikethrough (without using the "Changes" procedure, available in Edit) I created two macros and assigned keyboard shortcuts. They work exactly as I had hoped, but I cannot find where they are stored. I notice that in older .odt documents, the macros that I can see in My Macros all function, but not the two text altering ones … they only work in newer documents (presumably created since the macros were created).
Could I find out what I have created - might it be they are NOT macros after all, and where they are stored by examining the Customise > Keyboards listings?

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
Hello robleyd. I've looked where you suggested. Using (I hope) the 'correct' terminology, The macros that I can see, function in all documents.
WHOA! I'VE FOUND THE ISSUE!
The particular keyboard shortcut that I wanted to make available in the imported document ARE NOT MACROS! I finally remember now (my recall has never been readily available to me) … I attempted to record a macro … couldn't get it to work and, probably as a result of something I read in the OO Community Forums, resolved the situation by creating two character styles - then assigned a keyboard shortcut to each.
I have found how to make those two character styles available in documents not based on the template with which they are associated? (Aah! So true … to find the right answer, first find the right question) … by way of the OO Writer Users Guide - Styles and Formatting.
The question is then, can a macro be recorded (I have not the time, right now, to learn how to write a macro) that will perform the operation of applying a particular style to selected text?

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
See if this Wiki article on copying and moving styles helps.
Edit: Didn't fully read the question; I think you may already have that information. |

Re: Importing Macro & Short Cut
Yes, I do have that info … although I had not yet read in detail, the particular section to which the Wiki linked. It has however, only just occurred to me that it is not possible to create a macro to make the text styling operation 'globally' available, since the purpose-created character styles are only available to documents created (however indirectly) from the template in which they were incorporated.
