Prefix chapter number to footnotes/endnotes

I want to be able to automatically prefix a chapter number to my endnotes, e.g.:

NOTES
1.1. This is the first note to chapter one.
2.4 This is the fourth note in chapter two.
2.6 This is...

I can see that you can prefix a character to the footnotes, but not make it a field.

At the moment, I don't see any obvious way. You can reset the footnote count by chapter and I think that by using Sections for each chapter you can put the endnotes at the end of each chapter which may be a workaround.
