[Solved] Custom numbering format for headings misbehaving

Post by CannedMan »

I have a template created, using multiple heading styles for particularly heading level 1 (ToC, literature, appendices &c are all level 1 headings, so I cannot use outline numbering). I have selected the various heading levels for each heading, and connected heading styles to the numbering style. However, at level 3 and 4, I get some odd behaviour:

I have included my template file (which I am doing all the style work in). I cannot for the life of me figure out what is causing this, so any insight would be much welcomed.

What exactly is the strange behaviour in the third and fourth headings. A couple of things seem strange but without knowing your style manual recommendations I may be mistaken.

However Style Heading 3 is in EB Garamond Medium which gives a larger font size than Style Heading 2 which is in EB Garamond SC 08.

As per the image:
  • 2.1.A.1 Fusce consequat: This is displayed as an H4, even though it is formatted as an H3. It should read 2.1.B
  • 3. Curabitur dolor quam: This is displayed without the chosen numbering style at all. It should read 2.1.B.I, given that the heading above should read 2.1.B.
  • 3.1.A.I Morbi at urna sit: This has the correct formatting, but is – as per above – supposed to be 2.1.B.II.

So an update. The headings have their correct level set in their style; in this same window, the numbering style is selected (‘Overskriftsnummerering’). The numbering style is defined four levels down as displaying all levels including the current. Still I get incorrect numbering; as I can now see, it apparently applies to all levels of heading below 1.

Here is the solution: After selecting the style, make sure to hit tab to move into the correct heading level. This is necessary whenever using a separate numbering scheme, which is required if defining multiple heading styles for each level. If using a single heading style for each level, instead use chapter numbering from the tools menu.
