Some Fonts Don't Work

Post by Brak »

I am running macOS Sierra 10.12.1

I have found a font of mine not working in versions of OpenOffice earlier than 4.0

The font works in all versions 4.0 and higher. The font works in my other programs.
But for some reason its not in OpenOffice - instead of looking correctly, it just looks like a typical system typeset.

Even in the font selection preview doesn't show it correctly.

This occurs in both writer and impress (I haven't checked the other ones).

Thanks in advance.

PS: If you are wondering why not just use 4.x, I am having issues getting impress to work properly, but the older versions (except with the font issue) works just fine.

Please update your signature to reflect the OS/AOO versions you are actually using. How to update your signature

There is some font related information in Q32/A32 of [Tutorial] Mac FAQ which may be helpful to you.

Thanks for the quick response.

I updated my signature to include me trying to get a version to work on macOS, as requested.

I read the information you provided and tried the suggestions:
I deleted the profiles for both 4.x and 3.x
I restarted in "safe mode"

Sadly neither actions resolved the issue.

Can you provide details on the font? Is it a custom one or is it available somewhere?

Thanks for the response.

What kind of details would you like?

It's a TTF that I have been using, without problems, in windows for about 15 years.

I just started using a mac about a year ago or so, and just a couple months ago started to use OpenOffice on it to do presentations.
When I opened a presentation that used this font, I realized I needed to install it on my mac.... which I did.
But after doing so the presentation was still using the "default font" that is used when a font is missing.

I tried opening a writer document, and even though I can select the font, it looks like that "default font". Even in the font selection box, instead of looking like the font's typeset (like the others do) it looks like the "default font".

So I thought maybe its the font...... but when I installed OpenOffice 4.x the font works just fine.

I will attach the font so you can check it out.

If you are thinking "just use 4.x then", here is the post I made giving the details of the unrelated issue I am having with using the later versions:

Does that mean that it worked in earlier versions of OpenOffice.org in Windows?

The font's name is "TAF Hebrew Book". Its' version number is 1.04.

Yes, it has worked in every version of OpenOffice that I have ever used in Windows - and I have been using OpenOffice for just about as long as I have the font.

The font installs and works for me using OO on linux Xubuntu 18.04/1 (64 bit). Does the font show up in other applications on your Mac? Perhaps a reinstall of the font might help.

Thanks for trying on your system. When you tried it on your system, was it with OpenOffice 3.x?

I only have a few programs on my Mac that I could try....

It works fine in TextEdit.
Works fine inserting text into a picture with Preview
And, as I mentioned, it works fine in OpenOffice 4.x

I also have several times reinstalled the font.

No I'm on OO 4 (development version, for testing).

I'd suggest you concentrated on solving your OO 4 Impress problem to permit you to move to OO4.

Can you please post an OO 4 Impress file in your other thread, so we can investigate?

Try OO 4.1.5, but please post a small .odp file; screenshots are helpful to show what you see, but the actual file that generates them lets us see what is happening internally to cause the problem.

I believe fonts on Mac are stored in several different places. Check on an Apple forum.

No will be interested in investigating a problem with obsolete and discontinued software.

Search the MacOS forum with fonts - I quickly found Re: App error on startup - missing fonts? and clear the font cache.

1. Do a power OFF/ON Safe Boot. What happens?

2. Strange problems are sometimes fixed by resetting the profile - see Resetting the user profile.

Your Impress problem has been solved - the bulleted items carry the Outline 1 style - reset them to Default Text.

You can now upgrade to 4.1.6.

That is what I did - a safeboot, which is what the link told me to do.
I also reset the profile as well, which was also what the link told me to do.

And despite doing all of that (which I thought you meant by "clearing the font cache"), there was no joy.

So if you meant something else by "clearing the font cache", please let me know so I can try it.

As for the Impress issue - it has not been solved. I just posted on the thread a moment ago with the details.

Again, thank you for all the help with this - it is greatly appreciated!
