OCR to Writer formula

Post by MaxOO »

Hi,
I would know if will be possible scan/photograph a page with formulae (well written, as on a book) with an OCR able to export that in a Writer file as editable math formulae.
(What is the name of the language used by OpenOffice/LibreOffice in its formulae? I mean the language that we type (example: sqrt{3^2 over 5}) has a name or it's used just in OO/LO?)

Do you know any Math OCR (better if it's an app that can analyze photos directy from smartphone camera) that can scan formulae and export in Writer formulae?

Thank you very much :D

The Math application has a special markup language, but that has not a specific name.

That is not possible with LO or AOO. The best you can do is to convert the scanned characters to characters, where scanning E=mc2 would give five characters - E, =, m, c and 2, but not the relationship between them. See Math Guide - V3.3 in the Documentation.

Google scan math formula for other applications.
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

The Mathpix app can convert pictures of printed and handwritten math and convert it to LaTex. The new Mathpix desktop app that was recently released lets you take a screenshot of the equation on your desktop and copies the LaTex to the clipboard so you can just paste it into your LaTex/markdown editor.
